Fall 2014 Conference at Monterey, Dec 5-6

The 42nd Annual season Conference was held in Monterey on Dec 5-6 at Hyatt Regency Hotel and Spa.

Friday Keynote Speaker: Alon Amit
Randomness in Theory and Practice

We don’t normally think of "do it at random" as a useful approach to performing a task or constructing a complex structure. In this talk we will present some areas where this, surprisingly, has actually been the case: the Probabilistic Method can be used to show the existence of combinatorial objects that are very difficult to build explicitly, and randomized algorithms are used in many places where they seem to perform much better than any approach which is restricted from flipping a coin.

Alon Amit is co-founder of Origami Logic, a marketing analytics company, and has previously worked at Facebook and Google. He earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel and is proud to be a frequent speaker at math circles around the San Francisco Bay Area. When not working, biking or spending time with his family, Alon is often answering mathematical (and other) questions on Quora.

Saturday Keynote Speaker: James Stigler, UCLA
Changing the Culture of Teaching: Mathematics Teaching, and How to Improve It

Cross-cultural and psychological studies are used to ask: what kinds of teaching produce learning with understanding? And, can teaching make a difference in the challenges faced by developmental mathematics students?

James W. Stigler is Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean of Social Sciences at UCLA. He directed the TIMSS video studies and is co-author of two popular books: The Teaching Gap (with James Hiebert, Free Press, 1999) and The Learning Gap (with Harold Stevenson, Simon & Schuster, 1992). He received his A.B. from Brown University in 1976, a Masters in Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977, and a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1982. Dr. Stigler is best known for his observational work in classrooms, and has pioneered the use of multimedia technology for the study of classroom instruction.
